Swimrun. A sports invented by drunk Swedes. Need I say more? The original challenge was to get from Sandhamn to Utö by means of running and swimming. Since this is the Stockholm archipelago, you have to change from running to swimming quite often. This is why participants wear their wetsuits during the entirety of the race and swim while wearing their running shoes.
Anyway, long story short: we also wanted to participate in one of these crazy races. Luckily for us Dutchies there’s a swimrun not too far away, in Belgium: Amphiman Les Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure (LLEH). Since we were swimrun virgins, we opted for the short distance: about 15km of trail running and 3.5km of swimming. Not in one go of course, but divided into 9 runs and 8 swims.
It was a great experience. Exhausting, sure. Especially with the longest (750m) and coldest (9 degrees) swim all the way at the end, we were glad to reach the finish line. But it was good fun! Running in your wetsuit is strange, but then simply running straight into the water for a swim is just crazy. And everybody is doing it, which makes it very fun to watch and experience.
I really can’t wait for the next opportunity to participate in one of these swimruns. It is likely gonna be Amphiman 2017, for which I’ve signed up.
